Using RSS Feeds
What is a feed?
A feed (also known as an RSS feed) is a collection of web content that can be organized and viewed from a single location using a web browser, news reader or any other technology that is capable of reading feed data.
CSC feeds deliver content that is regularly updated and organized into distinct chunks of information, like new product releases, software updates, product bulletins, articles and product news.
What are the benefits of feeds?
Feeds provide several advantages over normal web browsing:
- Improved readability and organization - Feeds provide a summary of well organized information that can be quickly scanned.
- Information aggregation - Feeds let you select only the content in which you are interested and present it in a single location.
- Timelines - Unlike your web browsers static bookmarks feed readers can notify you when new content becomes available . This helps you to stay on top of information and reduces the chance that you will miss important news.
What do I need to use feeds?
To subscribe and view feeds, you need a feed reader that can parse the feed data and display the feed in a readable form. There are two main types of feed readers, desktop clients and web based services. A desktop news reader is software that is installed on your computer, either as a standalone application or as an add-on to another program, typically your web browser. Internet Explorer 7/8 and Firefox 3 all include support for subscribing to and reading feeds. Microsoft Outlook 2007 also allows you to subscribe to feeds notifying of new content in a similar way to when a new email message arrives. Other desktop clients and web based services can be found by searching on the web.
How to subscribe to a feed?
When you see the feed icon
click on the icon. If you are
using a web browser as your feed reader the browser should prompt you
asking you if you want to subscribe to the feed you have clicked on.
If you are using a standalone news reader application copy the url
from the address bar in your web browser and use your news reader to add a new feed to that url.
